Accurately Tracking Service Downtime on the Legendary Supply Chain Platform
Cloud Computing and Service Operations
Accurately tracking service uptime and downtime is essential for effective field service management and maintaining customer satisfaction. Assessing and analyzing the causes and frequency of downtime events provides insights into operational performance and highlights areas of improvement.
Technology plays a key role in capturing and organizing data in a accessible and scalable way. Legendary Supply Chain's service module offers teams the tools to monitor service uptime and downtime calculations with precision. With this platform, organizations can manage their entire service operation in the same unified platform as order management, purchasing, inventory management, repair, and more.
The Legendary platform offers two ways for organizations to calculate downtime:
- Header Downtime Calculation
- Log-Level Downtime Calculation
Both methods generate downtime logs, but they support different operational approaches and use cases. Offering flexible calculation paths means organizations can align downtime reporting with their unique workflows.
Psst! Check out this video to see downtime calculation functionality in action.
Header Downtime Calculation: A Focus on Initial Occurrence
This method calculates downtime using the initial "down" status datetime and the unit’s "up" datetime. It is best suited for scenarios where service interruptions are continuous and clearly bounded by start and end times.
For example, if a unit goes down on March 12 and is restored on April 15, the system automatically calculates the downtime between those two dates.
This approach simplifies reporting and adjustment. Users can update the initial or resolution timestamps directly from the service request, and the logs will reflect those changes without needing manual log edits.
Log-Level Calculation: Tracking Every Service Change
This method logs each status change—such as from down to limited to up—providing a detailed history of service events. Only time spent in a "down" status contributes to the official downtime report, even if the service request toggles between multiple statuses.
For example, if a service request transitions from down to limited, then back to down, each transition is captured as a separate log entry. This level of detail supports more complex service scenarios but may require manual adjustments if corrections are needed.
If a service request undergoes status changes from down to limited and back to down, both methods would capture these transitions. However, the header level methodology simplifies adjustment processes. Users can easily modify the initial occurrence date-time or unit update time to update logs accordingly, while the log level method might require manual intervention for corrections.
Benefits of Calculating Downtime on the Cloud
Tracking uptime and downtime through the Legendary platform improves visibility into service performance and empowers teams to take action. By leveraging real-time, accurate data, organizations can identify recurring issues, monitor vendor performance, and make proactive decisions about asset management, staffing, and resource allocation. With service operations fully integrated into the broader supply chain ecosystem, Legendary ensures that downtime metrics are part of an integrated operational strategy that drives efficiency, accountability, and improved service delivery.
Best Practices for Calculating Downtime
While the platform supports using both calculation methods, consistency is key. Adopting a single method across your organization ensures clear, reliable reporting. Admins can set a default calculation method in the system’s picklist settings to guide users and enforce standardization.
Legendary's service downtime calculation functionality is just one component of a comprehensive service management solution. By choosing the right method for calculating downtime and maintaining consistent practices, organizations can better understand performance, reduce service interruptions, and deliver a higher standard of care.
